Whistler B & B

First, an explanation...we've been without Internet for the past few days. We chose our lodging using criteria that included high-speed Internet access, but as one of our fellow guests remarked the other day, we forgot to ask if it was working! We're back online now, so I'll try to catch up with some of what we have been enjoying here in the great state of Texas. We'll start with the most incredible bed and breakfast imaginable--Whistler Bed & Breakfast in Huntsville, Texas. (Click to enlarge and read the marker.)

Whistler Bed & Breakfast is on the historical register for the state of Texas and you know why the minute you turn into the drive. The home is old and stately, graceful and welcoming. It's full of history. Our hostess, Mary, is a descendant of the original owners of the home which has never been out of the famly since it was built in 1859. Mary delighted us with stories about the house, the family members, life in Huntsville over the years...we never tired of our lively conversations with her over breakfast. And speaking of breakfast, not only is the table set exquisitely each morning with fresh flowers, crystal and vintage china, Mary's cooking is to die for! Here are more images of Whistler Bed & Breakfast. These and more are in the Bravenet photo albums linked in the right-hand sidebar.

Our Room.
This is the sight that your eyes behold as you walk through the door of the Thomason Room. The headboard is approximately 9 feet high.

The marbletop washstand.

The verandah swing.

It took me exactly 29 minutes from the time I walked in the door at the Whistler with my luggage until I was resting in this fabulous spot.

Yes, The Whistler is remarkable, and the hostess is in a league of her own! Such a gracious lady, sharp mind, engaging conversationalist, proud family member, endearing story-teller, and inquistive spirit...and excellent cook! The home is being prepared for exterior painting; hence, the scraped wood. Also, unavoidably, it can be a bit noisy at times. Glad we stayed there. Huntsville is the site of Sam Houston State University and the state prison where executions are conducted. And there is a 67-foot-tall white statue of Sam Houston!

Reading Glenn's comment reminds me of why HE should do the text for the blog. What a great summary description of the house, the hostess and the surrounding area of Huntsville.

Ames, glad you liked the pictures. It was incredibly beautiful. The ceilings are at least 10 feet tall and much of the furniture would not fit in a "normal" house. There is a fireplace in each of the downstairs rooms. Fabulous!

I meant to mention that Mary was my mother's age.
