Visiting the Glenwood cemetery in Beeville in search of Aunt Edith's grave last night, we were treated to a spectacular play of light and moonrise. Wow!

Mornings in Fulton Harbor
Fishermen, joggers, dog-walkers, bicyclists, dolphins, shrimp boats, photographers and birds are all part of the sunrise scene in Fulton Harbor.
Padre Island
A trip to the south Texas Coastal Bend would not be complete without at least one day devoted to the wild beaches of Padre Island. Once again, we spent the afternoon at the beach by the Bob Hall fishing pier. The surf was boisterous with gulls galore and more pelicans than we have ever seen in one place at one time. Awesome day!
Texas 2012 - Change of Plans
Our original plans (think: best-laid plans) went by the wayside when we had to change our travel dates, so Loyd Hall in Louisiana (see former post) will wait for another year. Instead, we returned to Fulton Harbor for the third time and made the Inn at Fulton Harbor our home base. As always, we delight in the rhythms of this seaside town which sits on Aransas Bay. Here are some of the birds we see daily. Top to bottom, Great Blue Heron, Egret, Cormorant and trio of Pelicans. Click to enlarge.

Fall Splendor in Oregon Wine Country
A recent trip to McMinnville served up a surprise summer splendor in September. While leaves were turning yellow in our home town in Washington, no such thing in McMinnville which was fully in bloom! This photo was taken on the campus of Linfield College.

Planning is Half the Fun
Here we come again, Texas! Glenn and I are busy planning our upcoming trip to the Lone Star State. We always try to plan a little something new along with all of our old favorite haunts and this year we're planning a side trip to Louisiana. We're flying into Houston for a day with Glenn's sister, Jo Anne, and family, then we'll drive to the thriving metropolis of Cheneyville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana where we will spend the night in an old plantation-turned-Bed & Breakfast. Loyd Hall is still a working farm in the middle of nothing but farmlands for miles and miles.
Cheneyville is a genealogy spot for me, the place my great grand aunt, Fannie Pollard, lived and raised her family. Fannie married Linn Tanner whose family was large and well known in the Cheneyville area, so there should be opportunities to see family homes and graves we hope. Linn, who was a writer and teacher throughout his life, was also a bugler in the Civil War and kept a diary that was later published, so we will also head to the genealogy library in Alexandria while we are in the area. Then we will head back to Houston to fly down to Corpus Christi and spend the remaining time in our favorite Texas spot, Fulton Harbor. Lots of family time and plenty of plain old down time on the Gulf Coast beaches are what we are looking forward to. Can't wait!
