Old and New at Waikiki

Standing on the corner of Lewers and Kalia, just about the only familiar site is Denny's which I decided did not warrant a photo. What used to be a cozy little trattoria, is now a glitzy Roy's restaurant in the also new Embassy Suites. The entire block has been revamped with a grassy area for concerts and lots of fun shops and restaurants.

On the corner of Saratoga and Kalia, the new Trump Hotel is close to a grand opening. They were busy with the landscaping this week.

This Trump hotel and condos is due to open in November 2009. It's about twice as tall as the Waikiki Shore, where we stay, across the street...but we're on the beach, Ha!!!

Economics drove the old away and brought in the new small businesses along Lewers Street...only the upscale shops and restaurants can afford to pay the rents that such prime real estate is capable of commanding. And if it had to be re-developed, I'd say they did an excellent job. It's a new "destination spot" in Waikiki.
